Scout Skills Outing June 3-5 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Dan Hampton

This outing is directed towards the newer scouts who would like to learn what to do on Troop outings and earn rank requirements while having fun.  I would also like to invite any older scouts who would like to come along on this outing to help teach the younger scouts.  This is a great opportunity for the older scouts to learn the one pot method of cooking.

The Plan

We will meet at Calvin Presbyterian Church at 5:00 p.m. on June 3rd.  From there we will head to Lake Merwin Camper’s Hideway, north of Battleground, Washington.  We will setup camp, have a late night snack, and get ready for a day of skill building.

Saturday morning we will work on cooking, cleaning, rope care and basic knots.  In addition, we will work on several more of the Scout rank requirements before lunch.  After lunch we will work on earning the Totin’ Chip.  Once we are done we will take a break and go swimming in the pool.

After dinner we will work on basic fire building.  As time permits we will continue working on Scout rank requirements. We will have an evening campfire with snacks and then head off to bed.  Sunday morning we will cook breakfast, break camp and head home around 10:00 a.m.

Outing Focus

This outing will be focused on basic Scout Skills such as:

  • · Campsite selection and setup
  • · Basic cooking (1 pot method) and cleanup
  • · Rope care, including whipping and fusing
  • · Basic knot tying (square knot, two half-hitches, taut-line hitch)
  • · Knife, Saw & Ax safety (Totin’ Chip)
  • · Basic fire building
