Reducing the load you carry can make backpacking more fun and safer, as long as you carry the safety essentials you need.   Following are links that can help you learn more about lightening your load.  This is just a starting point for your research.

This LINK is to a webpage with a bunch of gear lists of an extremely advanced backpacker who has the ability to take light weight to the extremes.  I wouldn't suggest duplicating his gear because he also has a lot of knowledge and experience in high risk situations.  However, you should be able to learn something from his gear selection.
