We will backpack (or pull sleds) on snow shoes or cross country skis from the White River West Snow-Park. Our path will be along the popular tubing area for about 0.4 miles to the gravel pit know as “The Bowl”. We will then make a short climb up the bowl to a gentle grade bench plateau of sparse trees and then hike about 1 mile on the plateau to near where the trees end at a spectacular viewpoint. We will camp in the wind protection offered from larger trees at the base of nearby Boy Scout Ridge. The distance will be about 1.5 miles with an elevation gain of 665 feet.

Depending upon conditions and the time of day after setting up camp, we may have time to hike up to the top of Boy Scout ridge and/or do some sledding/glissading.

We will cook Saturday dinner (freeze dried) and Sunday breakfast. Bring a sack lunch and drinks for Saturday. You will also need to bring plenty of water to drink while hiking. When we reach camp, we can melt snow on a stove to refill water bottles.

We will rent snow shoes for most of those who do not have any. For anyone wanting to cross country ski, prior experience is required – especially since you will be carrying a pack and will be skiing down hill on the way back.

Troop 799 White River
Sno-Park Family Outing
This outing is also open to all
Webelos and their families.

This is an event for you and your family to have fun in the snow. We will meet at Durham Elementary at 8:30 AM Sunday January 11th. All family members are welcome. We will supply lunch for everybody. Please bring any snacks you might want throughout the day. Also bring any snow sledding equipment you might have. Dress warm. We hope to see you there.

Driving Directions

To reach the Sno-Park, drive on US 26 to the Highway 35 junction, and follow Highway 35 to well-marked White River West Sno-Park, on the left, just before the bridge over the White River (if you cross the bridge, you've gone too far!). The Sno-Park is quite large, and includes a year-round restroom at the forested west side. Park near the north edge for easy access to the snow trails.

Permission slips and how many will be attending from your family are due at the January 6th Troop Meeting.

I need the permission slips to plan the food.

Sir Robert Baden-Powell Quotes

“Be Prepared... the meaning of the motto is that a scout must prepare himself by previous thinking out and practicing how to act on any accident or emergency so that he is never taken by surprise.”
